My group and I had different brain health topics. We had drug abuse, school shooters, medicinal drug abuse, athletes brain health, social life being important for teens, and childhood trauma. My topic was childhood trauma and I chose it because I had watched a Ted Talk that really opened up my eyes to how serious childhood trauma is in the U.S. Since some of our groups topics were so spread out, we wanted our topics to hit one main one. We chose drugs because no matter how we looked at it, we always got to the conclusion that there will be the use of drugs. In our zine we wanted to advocate for our topics by making a clear zine that had a QR code that could then send the reader to our research paper where they can learn more on our topics. We made our zine as attractive as we could as the first step in advocating is to actually grab the reader's attention. That is what we did and on top of that we added images and quotes that we felt were important and corresponded to our topic.
Literature research was very interesting for me as I had so many articles in front of me but only some had what I needed. This made it complicated for me as I had to read through numerous articles in order to get the facts that I wanted and needed. “...those who’ve experienced high levels of trauma are at triple the risk for heart disease and lung cancer and have their life expectancy lowered by twenty years” (How Childhood Trauma Affects Health Across a Lifetime). When doing my research this was a quote that really stood out to me and helped me form another section of my thesis. I was planning on talking about substance abuse but then I learned that Childhood Trauma also affects health. Doing the research really informed me of the consequences childhood trauma can have.
I am proud of actually being able to put quality work together. For my MCASD exhibition, although it may of have looked simple to many, I put effort into the pictures I took. I took them with meaning. For the Zine Fest I am proud of being able to create a zine itself as well as being able to produce the event. My production team was social media and eventually I got the hang of it and we got on a roll. After these 2 projects I have a better understanding as to how much work artists put into their work as well as just how complex it is to organize an event.
