For our project we were responsible for creating a zine fest as well as zines that share the importance of brain health.I have been able to understand just how important brain health is thanks to the CV Zine fest.. To me it is important for someone to understand brain health as this gives that person a tool when trying to help someone. What good is it to say I can repair a car when you know nothing about cars? Now I feel like I am in the position to tell someone I know and I am here for you. I want people to know that there are events in our childhood that could alter us as a person and we shouldn’t be afraid to ask for help. That if you aren't feeling down, maybe someone is. If a person is doing drugs or isolating themselves ask why. Don’t go straight into criticizing them, you'll just dig a deeper hole for them.
Basic needs I knew at the start of this project were water, food, and shelter. I learned that social needs are important in life (status, certainty, autonomy, relatedness, and fairness). I had thought that you can live without socializing but there is so much more to it. In order for many to have a happy healthy social life they need most of the social needs, if not all of them. That is why when they are not met they can resort to bad habits. That is why it is important for us to be informed in these type of topics so we can lend a helping hand to those who are lost.

Our Advocate
Due to the fact that we wanted to learn more about drug abuse in adolescents, we decided to interview a professional who advocates for this topic. We ended up interviewing Dr. Carla Marienfeld, who is a board-certified addiction psychiatrist at UCSD. Dr. Marienfeld specializes in treating those with substance use disorders and as well as other mental health conditions, like anxiety and depression. Through our interview with her we were able to gain an even deeper understanding about drug abuse because she is a professional who sees issues with this everyday.
